Letterpress printing, as a way of making art, is very formalized and process-oriented. Pre-cast letters fall into place along a grid. Words are linear and text is rectangular. Curves are difficult, the hand is absent. Images made for letterpress need to be interpreted, cut, etched, mounted and incorporated into the grid. Fortunately, letterpress printing is a subset of the printmaking technique known as relief printing. In relief printing, whatever sticks up above everything else accepts ink and transfers it to paper.
